Public art. Social infrastructure. Human connection.
Cellular Roots is a public sculpture initiative inspired by the hidden systems that connect and support life — neural networks, cellular structures, root systems, and social networks. Though different in form, each functions through connection, communication, and support. The project combines public art and communication technology to create sculptural installations that offer direct access to help in public space. Rather than asking people to seek support elsewhere, Cellular Roots brings access directly into the community.
Project Overview
Each Cellular Roots unit is designed as a durable public sculpture integrating: • A secured communication device • Pre-programmed support resources and contacts • Local service information • Potential solar-powered functionality • Weather-resistant construction The goal is to create infrastructure that is both functional and meaningful
How It Works
Cellular Roots installations are intended to provide access to:
211 and crisis services
Local shelters and outreach organizations
Community resources
Support contacts and essential information
By reducing barriers between people and support systems, the project aims to make help more visible and accessible
Inspiration
Cellular Roots draws inspiration from systems that quietly sustain life: cellular networks, neural pathways, root systems, and social networks. These structures share a common purpose — connection. They carry information, provide support, and create resilience through relationships. Cellular Roots translates these invisible systems into a public, physical form
Pilot Initiative
Initial development is focused on producing one or two installations in the Niagara region, with long-term goals for broader expansion through community and institutional partnerships. This is a self led initiative currently moving into the fund development stage.
With Lakeside Recovery generously coming on board as Presenting Partner and McGrath Custom Millworks as our fabrication house, we have set the groundwork to begin production of prototypes -stay posted for updates!
